08F, 09F: 10A In 08F, Friendship. Explores the political, literary, and philosophical dimensions of amicitia in variety of texts from the last century of the Republic, from the poetry of Catullus to the personal correspondence of Cicero. Issues to be considered include the boundaries of personal intimacy, countercultural implications of friendship circles, the intersection of friendship with patronage networks, and alternatives to sheer utility as the basis of friendship.
