The lectures deal with the preparation, properties, and reactions of most of the important classes of organic compounds. There is considerable stress upon reaction mechanisms and some attention is given to naturally occurring substances of biological importance. The laboratory work will introduce the student to experimental techniques and instrumental methods including several types of chromatography and spectroscopy, organic synthesis, and the systematic identification of organic compounds. Prerequisite: Chemistry 6 (or 10), or permission of the instructor. Supplemental course fee required. Dist: SLA.
