09S: 10A From the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century the artistic and intellectual movement of Romanticism dominated European culture. Its emphasis on strong emotions, tumultuous nature, and individual imagination was seen as a reaction against the rationalism of Neoclassicism, and as a response to major social and political changes. This course explores key paintings, sculptures, and prints by Romantic artists from France, Britain, Germany, and Spain, including Delacroix, Géricault, Constable, Turner, Goya and Friedrich.
