A nontechnical introduction to the study of linguistics, this course takes an interdisciplinary approach to language behavior. Particular attention is paid to cultural, social, and psychological aspects of language use. Topics vary and may include language origin, child language acquisition, gender and language, dialects, and slang, among others. Preparation for Course P: placement at or above ENG W131 (or equivalent) and exemption from or completion of ENG R150. Cr. 3.
