(264) Both semesters, Four credits. Prerequisite: To enroll in this course a student must have earned a grade of "C" or higher in Nursing 3220, 3215W, 3230, 3292;Nursing 3592 concurrent. Open to Nursing majors only. Not open to students who have completed NURS 262, 263. Major theoretical perspectives regarding etiology and treatment of psychiatric illness are described and discussed including biological, psychological, sociological and environmental factors. The evolving role of the nurse with regard to promoting mental health, patient advocacy, and preventing and/or minimizing adverse sequelae to psychiatric illness are explored, including use of therapeutic communication, critical thinking and application of the nursing process to assist individuals and families with a variety of behavioral health problems.
