Surveys the techniques and development of printmaking in Europe and the United States from the earliest print media to the present, and explores the various implications of the multiplied image on paper. From their inception around 1400 in Europe, the graphic media have established social functions and aesthetic criteria that differ considerably from those of painting, sculpture, and architecture.
