Examines the variety of societies, cultures, and institutions of the region in their historical and contemporary settings, beginning with pre-Colombian cultures and moving through the colonial period, plantation agriculture, slavery, the expansion of U.S. influence, urbanization, economic development models, authoritarian politics, and the contemporary migration of Caribbean people to the United States and Europe.
