Begins with the arrival of Europeans and the ensuing conflicts with Native Americans as well as the colonial wars and the American Revolution. Reviews the constitutional foundations for the military and the creation of a regular army, including the establishment of West Point. Focuses on the War of 1812 and the Mexican War followed by an in-depth analysis of the Civil War and its aftermath. Covers America's rise to world power status and the role of the military in this process. Surveys the twentieth century with particular emphasis on World War II, the Cold War, and the military's role in nontraditional environments, including peacekeeping and terrorism.
