Emphasis is on the impact of the West, the roots of nationalism, industrialization, the causes and effects of the Japanese colonial empire on the region, the American occupation of Japan, the rise of the People's Republic of China, and wars in Korea and Vietnam. Also devoted to contemporary issues in the region.
