Details the design and implementation of network protocols that compose a fully functional communication system. Discusses protocol concepts including encoding and framing; reliable transmission; packet forwarding and routing; and flow and congestion control. Architectural considerations focus on protocol interactions and the functionality/performance tradeoff. Includes a comparative discussion on the performance evaluation of communication systems highlighting different goals, metrics, and perspectives.
