Examination of artistic meditations on justice and rebellion and on national identity and the nature of the individual as these issues are embodied in texts by Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov. Focus on Russian modernity and the range of aesthetic explorations that it engendered. Readings and discussion in English.
