Topics include the Symbolists and Decadents at the end of the nineteenth century; the reception of the 1917 Revolution by Russian writers in the 1920s; the formation of Stalinist literary orthodoxy and reactions against it; and contemporary literary rebellions against the political and artistic legacies of the past. Readings include works by Blok, Bely, Babel, Olesha, Bunin, Akhmatova, and Bulgakov. Readings and discussion in Engli sh.
