Examines processes of change resulting from heredity, ecological adaptation, dietary differences, mate selection, disease, and other factors. Examines the problems of paleopathology (disease in ancient populations), humankind in the fossil record, and the place of biological and ecological factors in the fall of ancient civilizations. Detailed consideration of scientific and social bases for popular conceptions of 'race.'
