This course examines the ways in which the history of American Indian people in the United States has been ignored, appropriated, changed, and distorted, as well as reclaimed and reevaluated over time. We will pay attention to both the past and the present, to oral and written sources, to the varied opinions of academics and tribes, and to art, museum exhibits, and film. Most of the time will be spent exploring the history of the Great Plains region since 1870, but there will be opportunity for students to pursue individual interests as the term progresses.
