This course introduces students to the history of American housework, to theories of housework's meaning, to studies of household divisions of labor, to the home economics movement, and to contemporary approaches to "the housework problem." It will focus onsociological literatures that intersect around issues of the family, of public and private spheres of influence, of divisions of labor, of gender, and of social and cultural change.
