An introduction to linguistic anthropology. Students will become familiar with contemporary issues, themes, and theories about language. Topics include communication as a sign system; language as a formal abstract system; and the relationship between language and culture, language and social identity, and language and ideology. Students will become critical thinkers about ways language and language use a_ect and are a_ected by individuals, social groups, cultural practices, and politics. Alternate years.
