Description:
-
We will explore the vocal traditions represented by particular individuals whose creativity and expressiveness have moved millions: vocalists who have become cultural representatives to localized regions and beyond. As we listen to these voices (Carmen Miranda of Brazil, Umm Kulthum of Egypt, Lata Mangeshkar of India, and Madonna, for starters) we will have the opportunity to study the sociopolitical and cultural contexts from which they have emerged to understand better the traditional music systems and theoretical strategies which have been fused (to varying degrees) with transnational musical trends in search of an irresistible, popular sound.
