We survey Islamic political, social, and cultural development in the eras of the Crusades, the Mongol invasions, and the "gunpowder empires" (e.g., Ottomans, Safavids, Mughals) through the works of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish literature and the art and architecture of selected regions .
