Farriss. Early culture contact in Mesoamerica (Mexico and Central America) and the Andes. Compares European and Amerindian conceptions of time and space of evil and disorder, the individual's relation to society, the physical world, and the sacred. Emphasis is on the zones and the means of intercultural communication -- especially as influenced by the introduction of European writing -- and on the intermediaries who straddled the linguistic and cultural boundaries.
