Distribution Course in Arts & Letters. Class of 2009 & prior only. [Formerly ENGL 296]. Spaces will be reserved for English majors. This advanced seminar will examine the classical backgrounds to English poetry, in particular the Biblical and Greco- Roman antecedents to Renaissance lyric verse and verse drama (such as, preeminently, Shakespeare). Different versions of this course will have different emphases on Biblical or Hellenist backgrounds.
