Distribution Course in Arts & Letters. Class of 2009 & prior only. An introduction to poetic practices as they developed in England, and in English-speaking Britain and its colonies, between the late seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries. Typically, this course will survey poetry on both sides of the Atlantic, though its geographic focus will vary with the instructor. Students will focus on a variety of peotic forms including, through not restricted to: satire, the ode, panegyric, pastoral and topographical poetry, lyric poetry. We will seek to understand poetry as crucial to, and constitutive of, eighteenth-century aesthetic and cultural practice.
