As the traditional view of the Middle Ages as a hierarchical system - 'feudalism' - came under more critical scrutiny in the last two decades, scholars have highlighted the role of other binding forces in medieval society, such as communal identity, ethnicity, and race. This course will explore some of the rich medieval literature on these topics, with an eye to the development of national identity in Europe.
