Models and data to support the notion that brain representations are patterns of activity over widely dispersed populations of neurons, that mental processing involves coherent distributed engagement of neurons in these populations, and that learning and development occur primarily through the adjustment of the strengths of the connections between the neurons. How models may be used to explain aspects of human cognition, development, and effects of brain damage on cognition.
