An introductory course covering the engineering properties of soil, soil phase relationships and classification. Principle of effective stress. Seepage through soils and flow nets. One-dimensional consolidation theory. Soil compressibility and settlement prediction. Shear strength of soils. Pore pressure parameters. Introduction to earth pressure and slope stability calculations. Prerequisite: EGGN320. 3 hours lecture; 3 semester hours.
