This course explores the lives of common people during the early-modern period. It focuses on how ordinary people made sense of their world - what people thought, how they thought, and how they expressed such thought in behavior. Topics of study include family and community structure, poverty, criminality and violence, oral traditions, popular religion and beliefs, rituals, popular protest and rebellion, witchcraft and vampires, the development of manners, as well as the impact that the political, economic, social, and intellectual changes of the period had on popular culture.
