Lecture, 3 hours; outside research, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): upper-division standing or consent of instructor. Examines the modern metropolis from the Industrial Revolution to the present. Explores the history and theory of modern urbanism through case studies of metropolitan areas with a rich urban culture, architecture, and morphologic features. Investigates approaches to the problems of the large urban agglomeration in the context of social, political, and cultural conditions. Cross-listed with AHS 178.
