Examines the emergence of modernity in Europe, the first and second industrial revolutions in Europe and America, the development of device commodities as the typical form of consumer technology in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, philosophical issues in understanding technology, and whether or not the technological social structures in the United States are an exception to those developed in Europe.
