Lecture, 3 hours; extra reading, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): upper-division standing or consent of instructor. Considers the complex practice of dance, music, and performance art by expressive artists of color and asks questions about address, audience, white uses of black performance techniques, dance in relation to self-conscious historical memory, and the politics of authenticity and commodification. Investigates performances from different locations, from explicitly politicized to heavily commercialized. Fulfills the Humanities requirement for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
