Lecture, 3 hours; outside research, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): upper-division standing or consent of instructor. Examines the regional and social variation in language use within the Chicano community. Specific issues addressed are the maintenance of Spanish language use, private versus language use, the need for bilingual social services, language as a human right versus language as a constitutional right, and the political economy context of language. General sociolinguistic theory and methodology are also addressed. Cross-listed with SOC 165. Fulfills the Social Sciences requirement for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
