Lecture, 3 hours; extra reading, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): upperdivision standing. A historical analysis of Vietnamese literature from its oral tradition to contemporary fiction, with close readings of major authors. Follows the formation of the nation-state and struggle with the Chinese, French, Japanese, and Americans. No knowledge of Vietnamese is required. Readings are in translation or bilingual editions; classes are conducted in English. Cross-listed with AST 162 and VNM 162.
