Lecture, 3 hours; extra reading, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): ETST 003, upper-division standing; or consent of instructor. Examines the growth and evolution of the transplanted West Indian community in America. Attention is paid to the immigration process, community formation, political participation, economic consolidation, and intellectual and cultural contributions to African America. Explores the varied assortment of readings on the Caribbean American experience and the historiography and methodology of African American history. Fulfills either the Humanities or Social Sciences requirement, but not both, for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
