Lecture, 3 hours; discussion, 1 hour. This course is designed to provide an overview of the African American experience in the United States from antiquity to the present. It employs comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. Emphasis is placed on examining the African American experience in a world context and comparing the African American experience to the experiences of other racial and ethnic groups. Fulfills either the Humanities or Social Sciences requirement for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, but not both.
