Lecture, 3 hours; extra writing and rewriting, 5 hours. Prerequisite(s): an appropriate score on the University of California Analytical Writing Placement Exam; concurrent enrollment in ENGL 005D or ENGL 005L. Examines elements of academic argument in the context of major, conflicting texts. Particular attention is given to identifying, analyzing, and framing debatable questions and issues; finding and developing appropriate, persuasive arguments; and tapping the syntactic resources of standard English. Includes extensive readings and numerous writing assignments along with formal oral presentations. Students who pass the course with a grade of "C" or better have completed the Universityof California Entry Level Writing Requirement and are eligible to enroll in ENGL 001A. Students should be formally enrolled prior to the beginning of instruction and should attend the first meeting to avoid being dropped from the class. Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC) grading is not available.
