Lecture, 3 hours; extra reading, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): upper-division standing or consent of instructor. A study of the development of Italian theatre from the commedia dell'arte to our time. Discusses works by Ruzzante, Machiavelli, Metastasio, Goldoni, Alfieri, Verga, Pirandello, Fo, and Rame and includes videos of plays, melodramas, and operas. No knowledge of Italian is required.
