Lecture, 3 hours; seminar, 1.5 hours. Prerequisite(s): BCH 110C or BIOL 107A. An overview of genome organization and gene expression, with aspects of biochemistry, evolution, natural history, and clinical manifestations of human parasites Trypanosoma, Leishmania, Plasmodium, and others. Emphasizes the molecular and biochemical adaptations to parasitism. Prior knowledge of classical parasitology is not assumed. Students present original research papers during the seminar.
