Examines major works of Japanese women writers from Heian (ninth century) to contemporary, focusing on themes, genres, representations of gender, ideas of love and romance, and feminine aesthetics. Readings include fiction, poetry, essays, and drama, with the main emphasis on fictional writing. Classes are conducted in English. Cross-listed with JPN 150.
