Lecture, 3 hours; individual study, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): AHS 017B or upper-division standing or consent of instructor. Surveys the lives and work of women artists in Renaissance Europe from perspectives offered by the latest scholarly literature. Key topics considered are circumstances under which it was possible for women to become artists, how these women evolved from artists practicing in the cloistered convent to artists participating in the competitive public market place, what they painted, and who their patrons were.
