Explores the consolidation of class structures and state institutions and practices in the context of kin/civil conflict, the distortion and dissolution of nonexploitative social relations, and the constitution of gender, ethnic, and racial hierarchies. Considers ethnogenesis and the construction of state and mass cultures.
