Overview of the cultures and contemporary issues facing the people of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Examines the contribution of Oceanic studies to anthropological theories of kinship and exchange, gender, development studies, and indigenous knowledge systems. Emphasizes how Pacific Islanders draw on their cultural heritage in emerging from formal colonialism to establish new island nations.
