3 credit hours This contemporary issues course examines current societal issues in the context of the mass media's coverage. Examples could include the use of unnamed sources, reporting the names of rape victims, the adverse effect of violence in television on children, the effect of negative political advertising or the need of the public to know certain information versus an individual's right to privacy. The students consider various viewpoints surrounding these controversies and propose responses to these issues in mass media. Standards and ethics of contemporary journalists are analyzed.
