3 credit hours This course examines the multiple roles played by the media in contemporary politics and analyzes the implications of those roles. Political communications techniques, including the relationship between political professionals and the press; planning effective print and electronic campaigns; the strengths and limitations of polling and political advertising; and the importance of media consultants to modern campaigns are covered. An assessment of the beneficial and detrimental impacts of the media upon the democratic process is also included.
