This course traces the history of opera as a musical genre, from its beginnings in the early 17th century through the 20th. Through close study of several major works, students will gain a deeper understanding of the conventions of various operatic forms, and of approaches to combining music with drama. In addition, students will develop a broad understanding of the changes in musical style during this period, and their relationship to historical, social, and political events. Repertoire will include works by Monteverdi, Handel, Gluck, Mozart, Rossini, Wagner, Verdi, Strauss, Berg, Gershwin, and Glass. Either Music 324 or 326 must be completed for any music major curriculum. Prerequisite: Music 101, Music 102, or consent of instructor. Music 211 is also a prerequisite, or may be taken concurrently.
