Introduction to the sounds and social activities of musical traditions from around the globe, with emphasis on the musics of West Africa, Japan, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Students will develop listening skills and basic vocabulary for describing music, with opportunities for active participation in music-making. The course will explore the evolving roles of music in myth, religion, politics, and economics; the formation of class, ethnic, and gender identities; and the processes of globalization.
