The purpose of the course is to introduce the students to the art of jazz and its related cultural and historical developments. The course will examine the music and its significant figures in a forum that is sensitive to the ethnic and societal underpinnings at the heart of the music. Emphasis will also be placed on the cognitive listening skills necessary to better understand and appreciate this unique American art form.
