This course explores one specific dimension of 20th-century history, namely how societies and individuals faced the moral ambiguities caused by the Second World War. We will examine the issue of collective and individual choice in history. For example, to what extent is history determined by larger "forces" and to what extent does human agency shapespecific historic developments Our examples for the moral ambiguities presented by the war will come from several case studies of enemy-occupied territories: Greece, France and China.
