This is a course about mineralogical, chemical and textural characteristics of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Their occurrence and petrogenesis will be discussed in terms of rock associations and relevant physical and chemical processes of formation. Laboratory sessions will be devoted to petrographic description, identification and interpretation of rocks in hand samples and microscope thin sections. A Saturday field trip is required. Three one-hour lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week. Prerequisite: GES 243. Four Credits Peterson Spring Semester, Odd Years
