This course will focus on the history of Michigan, including its original Native American inhabitants, arrival of fur traders and voyageurs, rise of colonial powers, impact of European immigrants, industrial and political development, and recent history. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of primary archival materials with a case study of the migration of the Dutch to Michigan. Students will also be exposed to the many ways the story of Michigan is told through story-telling, oral history, and published sources and material preserved in archives, museums, and historical sites.
