The basic principles of physical chemistry are introduced with applications in the chemical and biological sciences. Underlying principles of thermodynamics, equilibrium, and kinetics are developed and applied to solutions, enzymes, spectroscopy, and macromolecules from macroscopic and statistical perspectives. Lecture, 3 hours per week; discussion session, 1 hour per week. Prerequisites or corequisites: Chemistry 121, Mathematics 132 and Physics 121. Mathematics 231 is strongly recommended.
