A period survey of the art and architecture of the 16th through 18th centuries in Southern Europe, including Caravaggio and Bernini, and Northern Europe, including Rubens and Rembrandt, as well as the cultures in the Americans and Asia that were affected by European exploration and colonization. Thematic issues will be discussed such as the role of art in the Counter-Reformation and in the expression of cultural identity in Europe and abroad, especially as it relates to the missions of the Jesuits and Franciscans.
