Provides the student with the knowledge of plastics product and tool design as it pertains to successful production tooling. Emphasis will be placed on the role of the following elements in Product Tool Design: Material selection, mold filling analysis, mold components and functions, compression/transfer and injection mold design, part design criteria, blow, extrusion/die, rotational, and thermoform mold design, heating and cooling of molds, runner and gate design, tool steels/heat treating selection, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
